Letter and photograph of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1867, n.d.

In an 1867 August 11 letter from Farringford, Tennyson writes to Mrs. Joseph Dalton Hooker, wife of the director of Kew Gardens, about a problem in William Selwyns's Latin translation of Enoch Arden. Selwyn needs to know whether a certain flower is found in the South Polynesian Islands. Tennyson believes Dr. Hooker would be more helpful than himself and refers Mrs. Hooker to a passage in a book by William Ellis. An undated sepia carte-de-visite of Tennyson is included.
